CAPS Team | Experts in Autism, Sport & Inclusion

Meet team CAPS

Dr Ruth Moyse

I am committed to improving the lives of autistic people through meaningful inclusion, ensuring systems, environments, and practice are accessible, equitable, and shaped by lived experience.

I am Co-designer and Lead for "Coaching Autistic People through Sport", Head of Training and Co-production at AT-Autism, and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Southampton (ACoRNS). I also contribute to the Autism Central Family Peer Guide Supervision Team. My work brings together research, SEND expertise, and practical application to influence change across education, health, and community settings.

I have co-directed the National Autism Trainer Programme and co-led the Autism and Wellbeing in Schools project, supporting professionals to embed inclusive, evidence-informed approaches within their practice.

My doctoral research, Missing: The autistic girls absent from mainstream secondary schools, used participatory methods to centre autistic voices and better understand barriers to access, inclusion, and wellbeing. This work continues to inform my wider focus on inclusive education, SEND systems, and reducing inequity.

I work across research, training, and practice as a researcher, lecturer, workshop facilitator, and specialist practitioner, with a background in teaching and SEND leadership.

Areas of focus include:

  • SEND and inclusive education systems
  • Autistic children and young people
  • Pupil voice and co-production
  • Mental health and wellbeing
  • Exclusion, access, and participation
  • Evidence-informed and participatory practice
  • System change and professional development

I believe lasting change comes from working with people, not for them, embedding inclusion through collaboration, insight, and design.

I’m passionate about creating spaces where everyone feels they belong, especially in movement, sport, and wellbeing.

I design and deliver evidence-based interventions that address inequality, supporting autistic individuals, diverse neurotypes, and those experiencing mental health challenges to access environments that build confidence, autonomy, and long-term health.

I co-created the first accredited sports coaching course of its kind in the UK, giving universities, educators, and organisations the tools to deliver genuinely inclusive practice. I have also written and delivered a SEND Policy module for degree-level students, helping shape future professionals’ understanding of inclusive education.

I work with charities, schools, universities, and health services to redesign environments, reduce sensory and social barriers, and ensure every participant has a positive, dignified experience. My work with NHS services has also reinforced the role of movement-based approaches in early support pathways.

Areas of focus include:

  • Accredited course and curriculum design
  • Neuroinclusive intervention strategies
  • Mental health-informed coaching
  • Barrier analysis and inclusive environments
  • Executive function and motivation support
  • Disability inclusion and wellbeing advocacy
  • System design for equitable participation

I believe access to movement, strength, and community should never depend on circumstance, equity is achieved by design, not by chance, and that belief underpins everything I do.
