Creating Inclusive Sport for Every Participant
Supporting clubs to create inclusive environments where every participant can belong, participate and succeed.
The Problem
Grassroots sport plays a vital role in supporting physical health, mental wellbeing and social connection. Clubs provide opportunities for people to develop skills, build friendships and become part of their local community.
Yet many autistic and neurodivergent children and young people never access these opportunities.
Not because they do not want to take part, but because traditional sporting environments can present barriers that make participation difficult or overwhelming.
Sensory differences, motor coordination difficulties, communication differences, anxiety and the social demands of sport can all affect a participant's experience. For many families, uncertainty around whether their child will be understood or supported can prevent them from attending in the first place.
Clubs want to be inclusive, but coaches are often expected to manage increasingly diverse needs without the training, knowledge or confidence to adapt effectively.
As a result, many autistic and neurodivergent participants either never join, or leave sport altogether after negative early experiences.

The Impact
When a participant has a negative experience in sport, the consequences can extend far beyond a single session.
Repeated experiences of anxiety, exclusion or failure can reduce confidence, damage self-esteem and shape attitudes towards physical activity for years to come. Research suggests that early experiences in sport influence long-term participation, health outcomes and overall wellbeing.
For clubs, this often results in:
- Lower participation from underrepresented groups
- Reduced retention and increased dropout rates
- Coaches feeling unsupported when challenges arise
- Families lacking confidence in the club environment
- Loss of talent
- Missed opportunities to positively impact the wider community
Many clubs are already committed to inclusion. What is often missing is a practical framework that enables coaches to deliver inclusive sessions consistently and confidently.
The Solution: CAPS
The CAPS Course has been developed to help grassroots clubs and community organisations create genuinely inclusive sporting environments.
As the first accredited course in the UK through CIMSPA (the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity), CAPS provides a nationally recognised standard for inclusive coaching practice.
Through evidence-informed training, CAPS equips coaches with practical strategies to understand behaviour, reduce barriers and adapt sessions to meet the needs of autistic and neurodivergent participants.
The course focuses on simple, meaningful adjustments that can significantly improve participation, confidence and enjoyment, without requiring extensive new resources or specialist equipment.
CAPS supports clubs to create environments where more people can access, enjoy and remain involved in sport.

Why It Matters
Every individual should have the opportunity to experience the physical, social and emotional benefits that sport can provide.
Inclusive coaching is not simply about increasing participation.
Done well, inclusive practice can:
- Reduce anxiety and increase confidence
- Improve engagement and enjoyment
- Support emotional regulation and wellbeing
- Strengthen relationships with families
- Increase retention and long-term participation
- Help clubs become trusted and valued community organisations
When participants feel safe, understood and supported, they are far more likely to start, stay and thrive in sport.
Inclusive sport benefits everyone.
